I find the present status quo to be more undemocratic than if the EC president would just be selected by European council or direct election of commission president. There is discrepancy between what people vote for and what people get. People base their decisions on national political parties, yet national political parties in many countries are wildly different from the EP political groups they sit in. It is not uncommon that people vote for a certain national political party, although in EP their views align more with a different political group than where the national political party sits. For example in my country social democrats are corrupt and utterly incompetent so many people vote for the center right national party in EP elections, although on EP level they prefer S&D way more than EPP.
