One of the saddest places I found whilst wandering around Solstheim. I found a half destroyed shack near the coast and started searching around it to see if there was any loot to be found, and I ended up finding a trapdoor to the basement.
When I was Inside, I heard some people talking, they turned out to be reavers, and they seemed to be talking about someone they found in a tunnel. They spotted me and I had to kill them. When I searched the basement I found a Journal by someone called Hrodulf... It starts off with him talking about arriving in Solstheim and finding this house, and taking it as his home. Eventually he starts talking about a sound he keeps hearing:
"There is a calling from the depths, a rumble drone that sings to me at night. I've started sleeping in the basement and keeping a knife near. The call is loudest down here. I will to be ready for whatever is coming... "
I have been hearing this strange sound too, like steam and clanking metal, and I recognize it as something Dwemer. It seems like the sound drove Hrodulf mad, and he started digging towards the sound to try and figure out what it is. He mentions someone called Bjorn, and I find a letter from Bjorn who seems worried about his love Hrodulf...
I found the place where Hrodulf was digging hidden behind the bookshelf in the room and the short tunnel leads to a small Dwemer styled room, and there is a body on the ground... I assumed it was Hrodulf, and the one the Reavers were talking about, but his name was Bjornolfr. He was holding a bloodstained letter from Hrodulf:
"bjorn
do not come to this place
I have not much self left
the earth will take us both
h"
There isn't much else in this room, just some Dwemer machinery still working and making its noise, and a chest with some random loot. But this isn't where it ends. After I leave the place and carry on travelling towards the coast, I find a small rowboat on the shore, and near it there is a spriggan, which I have to fight. After I kill it, I see the fate of Hrodulf... he is laying there near the boat with a broken axe, and In the boat I find an amulet of Mara, perhaps meant for Bjorn?
He seems to have been driven Insane by the persistent sound that he tried to escape the island altogether, who knows.
Both of these men were killed unexpectedly without ever finding each other, never knowing what happened.
