School Ends Dr. Seuss Reading When Students Recognize Its Racism Lesson

That’s kind of flawed logic. Look at what happens when you let parents teach the kids about sex rather then have comprehensive sex education. The topic of sex makes people uncomfortable, and many parents have strong opinions about whether or not it should be the role of teachers to teach that because it makes them uncomfortable. The kids of these parents end up never learning important life skills. In places that have evidence-based sex education courses that teach about safe sex and contraception, there are lower rates of unwanted teen pregnancies (by extension preventable abortions if thats something you care about) and lower rates of sexually transmitted diseases. Both of these things are generally good for communities as it fights poverty and disease.

We have a racism problem in this country. That’s reality. If we don’t publicly acknowledge that that racism exists and that discrimination based on race is wrong because it makes parents uncomfortable, then kids might never learn that lesson. Letting parent deal with it just means allowing parent to deprive their children of a much-needed education in how other human beings should be treated. It just allows people to continue to be ignorant because they don’t want to feel marginally uncomfortable with reality.
