Sea of Thieves Pirate Code: We need your feedback!

Personally, aside from people being vocally aggressive or mean-spirited, if you programmed it into the game then anything is fair game. You want this to be community based, but the dev team is ultimately the gatekeeper and arbiter here. If you don’t want some kind of trolling or griefing then you need to make sure it’s not in the game code for them to do it.

For example: In Rainbow Six Siege team killing is punishable and I feel that is wholly unfair. If that’s a punishable offense then the devs shouldn’t have programmed in the ability for friendly fire.

Nothing is going to disappoint me more about game that is supposed to be about thieving pirates than rules that punish players for acting like pirates and sometimes betraying those around them for their own personal gain.

I understand this game is more light-hearted and family-friendly-ish, but I’d be more willing to accept restrictions from the game itself than seeing others be punished unless it’s some kind of funny in-game mechanic like walking the plank.

I say this as someone who wants a level-headed crew that has mutual goals. People that want to be trolls or griefers should be able to have their fun too.

In the alpha, the only troll-ish thing I did, completely out of boredom b/c of the lack of variety (which is understandable in an alpha state), was to board another crew’s boat while they searched for treasure on an island, lower their sails, and raise the anchor which forced them to mermaid back to their ship and lose out on the loot they found. My crew did this as we sailed by them just off shore, swimming for their own vessel, we played them a tune with our instruments. Should we have been punished for that? I don’t think so, and I’d personally find that funny had another crew done it to me and honestly, to me, that could build camaraderie in this game. Innocent ball busting that ends up being inclusive in the end.

I know some would take it too far, but again, code in the guidelines if you don’t want it happening in game. Try to curb unwanted player behavior with mechanics or the in-ability to do certain things with code, but don’t punish them for having fun in their own way.

Honestly, now that I’ve said that, I think maybe the best solution would be to use a “don’t join sessions with this user present” feature if at all possible. That way the community can decide what kind of gamer they find suitable to be in a season with. Or maybe a type of review system, where other players can review only crew members they previously played with and players joining that session can decide if it’s worth their time playing with them or not by looking at each of their crew member’s reviews. That way you have some kind of social feedback that each player can even personally see of themselves and maybe reflect on how they treat others.

I think that last paragraph is a much better option than punishment b/c even being socially shunned or outcast is a type of punishment and might just even be in the spirit of pirate legends.
