[Serious] How to survive in a society that is solidifying it's homophobia, racism and facism? Seeking advice in the face of a dark future. (A good read if you're also wondering what's going on in Brazil)

This seems to be the story all over the West: globalization has made a small number of well-healed people fabulously wealthy while at the same time driving the middle and labor classes into poverty. Traditional left-wing politicians are characterized as venal, feckless, and complicit in this (and in many countries, namely the US and UK, there's truth to this; they spent the 90's and 2000's hiding behind a rainbow flag while continuing Reaganite and Thatcherite economic policy)...

This is what's called a convulsive period in history. People who are not very adept at seeing what is going on around them begin to adhere to simple narratives of us vs them and rally behind traditionalist/right wing candidates who ride the wave of popular outrage and tribalism - stoking hatred of outgroups, outsiders, and foreigners to consolidate their hold on power... and of course, once in power, they do everything they can to further rig the system in their favor and against the popular will of the people.

Western political and financial elites have spent the past 30 years building a system of trade and finance that only benefits the wealthy while pushing an agenda to destroy public trust, public oversight, confidence in government, and public investment (be it investment in infrastructure, education, or the "safety net")... The result is what we're all living through now... the saddest part of all this is how so many people are choosing to side with the men who did this to them - choosing to back strong men who will worsen the economic situation... and along the way, because of the hatreds and resentments being stoked, the people will happily abandon any pretense of liberty and democracy - because in the end, liberty and justice for all, includes the people you hate.
