I have two tales from the ER :D
"The Knife"
When I was 12 a friend of mine was in my garage and being an idiot throwing a steak knife at the door over and over like it was a dartboard. I opened the door and got the knife right in the leg! I went to the doctors to get the knife removed, stitches, tetanus shot etc. and they didn't have anything for the pain.
Not the most amazing story, but as a 12 year old it didn't feel that great having a knife pulled out of my leg and then 20 stitches without a shot of the good stuff. The funny part is I didn't feel the knife going in, but I sure as hell felt it coming out!
I remember letting out a few "YOW!" and "ARggh!" sounds when they were working on me.
I came out from the back room when they were finished stitching me up and I totally remember walking by 3 horrified little kids that were obviously in line to see the doctor next!
"The Bike Ramp" Oh God this experience was horrible
I was 17 and STUPID! My friend and I were testing out a huge bike ramp my buddy had made in his garage. The worst part is we were wearing helmets beforehand and then we went inside for sandwiches and never put them back on when we came back out. I took a running start and launched my fool ass off of that ramp with so much force that the forks of my bike folded in two when I hit the ground, I completely taco'd the tire. I proceeded to fly over the handlebars and smash my head and face directly into the pavement and slide on my back a few feet. When I hit the ground I also broke my ring fingers and dislocated both of my middle fingers.
I was so screwed up that when I was at the local clinic, I said that I was 14 when I was actually 17... Just imagine my mothers face when I said the wrong age!
I was airlifted to a hospital and the whole way there they were freaking out on me for not wearing a helmet. I got to the hospital and got to lay on a table as various people with clipboards came up, wrote things down, then walked away.
I got to go for a ct scan and then lay on another table for a good while as more people with clipboards came up to me, wrote more things down, and then walked away.
Then I got to sit in the busy hallway of the hospital, bloodied, with a tear on my face below my eye and my back shredded like meat with a few broken and twisted fingers. People kept walking up and asking if I got in a car crash... "No, jut a bicycle accident..!" People in my town heard I was in a bike accident and instantly thought, "motorcycle".
I went into the ER and the doctor stuck needles in each of my hands and popped my middle fingers back in place, then he put splints on my broken fingers and cleaned the gravel out of my back with a friggin toothbrush and iodine!
I lost a whole summer to going to physiotherapy and I couldn't even knock on a damn door for almost a year.
