[Story] What type of horrible jobs have you had/have, and how did/are you getting through it?

I make plans and have a goal in mind that I work towards. When I'm struggling that day, done 8 hours and there are 4 to go, dead on my feet already... I can think about the plan, picture the goal and the steps ahead, and know exactly why i'm going to stick it out.

Don't worry, and care only as much as it effects you directly, what people at work think of you. These people are not going to be part of your life for long. Be civil, but ignore their opinions of you. It's work, you don't need these people to be your friends. You're going to work with a lot of shitty, ignorant, objectionable people over time, particularly when you're young and starting out. It's probably a petty power trip of some kind, just let it slide.

My goal started out being just to pay off debts and pay my way, after letting myself and other people down. At 19 i dropped out of university with no degree, some student loan debt and having wasted my parents money. I wound up back living with my parents, with with few prospects, an acute sense of failure, and ended up working whatever temp jobs i could get.

It was a tough time, however looking back now it was formative and gave me the work ethic that i failed to pick up before. I used to get up at 6.30 to ride a few miles into town, to sit in the job agency office, waiting to hear what work was available that day. Sometimes nothing, but usually there was work. I cleaned offices, worked warehouses, kitchens; washed, stacked, packed... whatever.

The worst job i took was breaking up a pile of old pallets out the back of a big distribution warehouse. It was big, unstable and the pallets were all broken and rotten... nails and staples everywhere, and this is around November time in the Uk. A truly miserable job.

After a while though, as i began to get better jobs, a month here... two months there... eventually an ongoing data entry job, saving a small amount of money and starting to pay rent to my parents, I made some more ambitious goals. Travelling/moving to my own place... those got me through many 60hr weeks that followed.

Knowing what your current goal is, whatever it may be, short or long term, will get you through a lot. Good luck with getting another job!
