"Teacher, what's a virgin?"

I'm a teacher, and last year I taught sex education to 7th graders. Now I'm teaching 6th grade, and they seem so much younger intellectually. I am not teaching sex education this year.

When my 6th graders ask questions like this, I redirect them to talk to their parents. Virginity is also such a subjective issue. When I taught this to 7th graders we discussed how virginity might be defined differently, and I stressed that their personal values, including what they are taught at home (through parents, siblings, friends, and even church) might be different compared to someone else's.

That said, however, I do not think you are in a position to teach sex education to children ages 3 and up, and I think you should redirect them in a non-judgmental way to their parents.
