Texas mayors ask Gov. Greg Abbott for authority to require face masks: Abbott has banned local governments from fining people who don't wear masks in public.

Or -- and hear me out, I know this is a radical idea -- everyone could wear a mask and then they would not have been affected by fines at all! I live in one of the cities that proposed fining people. We needed that rule in place, for especially egregious behavior, and it was spelled out that they wouldn't be fining people willy-nilly, but instead needed a tool for people who flat refused no matter what.

Our city leaders are the only ones showing leadership. Our president said he wasn't in charge... and then he was if the governors weren't doing what he wanted. Our governor said he wasn't in charge... until mayors picked up the task in a way he didn't like.

A first offense DWI has a possible $3,000 fine, plus jail time, plus loss of a license for a year. The Governor doesn't fret that the fine is too high -- everyone agrees, just don't break the rule.

Same thing here.
