Is there a good way for determining what a character should know about their world?

For my homebrew, I already told my players that asking "what do I know about X" is going to be their best friend.

To start, I gave them basic information about their starting area and their first destination, and a couple sentences about the kingdom they are in. Everything else in the world got a sentence or less.

Beyond that, I am not going to try and divinate what they want to know about, so I figure it out on the fly using character backstory when they ask at the table. "Oh. You were with a traveling carnival? You would have definitely been to the capital, and you have seen and experienced the xenophobia of the city firsthand. You would have heard about the recent change in leadership and the recent efforts to redistribute land within city limits so that humans exclusively are landowners." "You are a rock gnome who has been living in caverns under the eastern hills your whole life? Unless it is about rocks or minerals, you know less than 0 about the happenings in surface cities."

If they ask more about it, that's when I might throw in knowledge checks if it adds flavor, but most of the time I am happy to be able to deliver some exposition that the party has expressed interest in.
