I believe automation will be strategically manipulated by the capitalist elite so that it doesn't cause any instability to the economy and, thus, their power. However, their greed will not stop them from implementing in order to compete against their fellow capitalist. Gradually, we will become a more automated society. At this point, we will enter what I'm going to just call The Automated Age which seems to be the realistic progression from the Information Age. We already have the information. Now, we're trying to develop the technology to process it and provide solutions that humans can't process themselves. Hence, the move toward automation and AI.

It's important to note that once we enter a new 'Age', there is no real way to predict how society splinters off. The warrant is still out for humanity's ability to extinct itself, after all.
