Teachers of Reddit, when’s a time when you realized a student wasn’t going anywhere?

I remember when I had a student who just didn't care. It was so obvious in the way that they would slouch in their seat and refuse to do any work. They would just sit there and stare off into space or doodle on their paper. It was clear that they had zero interest in anything that was going on in class.

I tried everything I could think of to engage this student and get them interested in learning, but nothing worked. I even spoke to them privately to see if there was anything going on that was preventing them from engaging in class, but they just shrugged me off and said they were fine.

Eventually, I realized that there was just no reaching this student. They clearly didn't care about their education or future, and there was nothing I could do to change that. It was a frustrating experience, but I had to accept that there are some students who just won't be helped.
