Thug gets wise then arrested

Exactly. People don't realize that their chief complaint lies with the fallibility and failings of humans. Having imperfect humans perform the dangerous but necessary task of apprehending the worst of the worst, will inevitably lead to some bad outcomes. That's an indictment of humanity, not of policing itself.

We have 800k cops, so imagine filling a medium sized city with nothing but police, and expecting them to behave perfectly like robots. That's absurd. You're always going to have drunk drivers, tax cheats, murderers, thieves, etc. among any population that large. You can mitigate with extensive screening, lie detector tests, etc., but you will always have a few bad apples in a barrel that enormous.

And yet, some Leftists are clamoring to defund them. It's insanity.
