TIL that a Gurkha Soldier of the Indian Army single handedly fought off 40 armed bandits with his knife killing 3 and injuring 8 to save a girl from getting raped during a train robbery in India.

The fact that you think that is badass speaks for itself. That is downright embarrassing, and just terrible behavior, more resemblant to that of the enemy you are fighting against, whilst also not really warrior like at all.

Gurkhas certainly are at average good infantrymen, no doubt, like many other units. And in a world where 99%+ of people are not soldiers, naturally any highly trained soldier, once faced with enemies who often have no experience and are even on the lower side on the fighting side (like most terrorists), will do extraordinary things. But Gurkhas are nowhere near British SAS, American DEVGRU, Norwegian FSK/HJK, Polish GROM and the likes. The type of elite forces where there are a couple thousand such people worldwide, having the right mental, physical, psychological, social and ethical skills and then going through the hardest and longest selections and educations in the world to be a part of a team with like-minded people to operate under an open leadership where creativity is valued.

I know many Royal Marines that have operated with Gurkhas. They are good grunts, and certainly some of the Gurkhas are on the level of some of the Royal Marines, however most certainly are not for obvious reasons. The main point in ever becoming a good soldier is what's between your ears both in terms of motivation and strength, but mostly the intellect. A great soldier then of course the ethical aspects, like winning over the locals.

The incident you refer to is in that regard again simply embarrassing, and how incredibly detrimental that was to the actual mission. The Norwegian FSK and British SAS have had the entire anti-terror command over Kabul for the last years, with the Norwegians having the larger share. During this period these two forces stopped literally hundreds of terrorists attacks, going to the most extreme lengths to avoid civilian deaths (risking own life), and during this period not losing a single operator. These are super soldiers, these are the great ones, but alas secret units with secret soldier who get no glory unless they die, sad as it is.
