When I was in basketball pep band in college, there was a kid on the team who very obviously bought his way on. His parents were well-known and very wealthy alumni. He only ever got to play in blowouts and we’d celebrate like crazy when he did anything even remotely interesting. It wasn’t a genuine celebration, it was born of the scorn we had for someone who got to be on a major conference basketball team, something everyone else on the team had to work there absolute ass off for, because his family sucked up to the administration. I don’t think he ever made a basket, at least while I was there. I’d remember because we would’ve celebrated like it was a buzzer beater and then laughed about it for weeks.
