UK TV Detector Van

I worked for TVL when I finished college.

Simply put: it's the right to watch anything broadcasted (+iplayer).

Even if your mum records Blue Planet, puts it on a VHS, and brings it round for you to watch. Unless you have a licence, you're not allowed to watch that VHS.

However, if Netflix acquired the rights to Blue Planet, you can watch the Netflix stream of it and wouldn't need a licence.

You don't need a licence to watch Amazon Prime, unless Amazon Prime is broadcasting a live football match for example, then you do need a licence.

If you want to watch ITV live on ITV Player, you need a licence. But if you want to watch something on demand on ITV Player, you don't need a licence.

And BBC iPlayer you need a licence whether live or on demand.

Honestly at times when working there, it felt like we were making stuff up as we went along.

They have some shady business practice which I won't get into, but it involved siphoning money from the DWP.

I haven't paid for my licence since leaving (they checked to see if you had a licence, if you didn't have one, they'd inspect your home.) This was to work there.
