The further this goes on it seems like the only hope would be secession, a war, some way of separating the people who clearly have very different mindsets and priorities.

But give it a few months. The national attention span isn't very long and it's likely that nobody will be talking about this soon. If they manage to persist through the next winter then it's clearly a bigger thing than most events.

The bad part is if it does die down that means nothing has been done to separate people who clearly have extremely different visions of what this country should be, and the next time will be even worse than now. Eventually one of these conflicts of mindsets will be the breaking point.
