Well shit

Don't mind one bit, I'm happy to share! What he found was disappointing in some ways but also totally a relief because things weren't as bad as I thought.

I'll just type out exactly what the results indicate on my report, and I'm including wiki links for more info on the individual items, but those reading this should note that it's likely that trigger words/graphic images of the body will be on the wiki pages, due to the medical nature of the text.

  • Distal erosive esophagitis without Barretts
  • Small hiatal hernia
  • Mild gastritis without ulcers
  • J-shaped stomach (I can't find anything interesting to source this, but my doctor told me that the bottom portion of the "j" shape was almost as high as the very top, near the esophagus. He said that this shape was likely worsening my reflux symptoms.)

So to sum up, I have erosion damage in my esophagus from reflux, I have a slight hernia, where the top of my stomach is within my esophagus, I have stomach irritation and my stomach is very slow to empty, and my stomach is shaped in a way that can exacerbate reflux and irritation.

I have chronic migraines and have been taking NSAID painkillers for 2/3 of my life, which probably contribute to the irritation, erosion, and general stomach maladies I have, but the other two are strictly anatomical.

The RX was a proton-pump inhibitor, Prilosec (OTC in the US now), which basically reduces the amount of acid produced by the stomach. I'm also to follow a GERD diet (which I'm not exactly strict about unfortunately) and sleep on my left side to position the stomach/esophagus in a way that keeps the stomach lower. Sleeping on my left side has helped more than anything!
