What are you reading?

Finished the last half of chapter 8 of Umineko Chiru. All in all, i thought it was a very fun, fitting ending to the series. I can understand why there were some people who expected more "closure" or definite answers, but i thought the chapter dealt very well with spoilers and stuff. Umineko definitely is one of the best VNs i've read, and I would heavily recommend it to anyone.

With that out of the way, I ended up being snowed in from work on thursday and friday, so I managed to get through the entirety of YU-NO: A girl who chants love at the bound of this world. Originally released for the PC-98, I'm sure this game is probably older than a number of people reading this post right now. But I think it still holds up quite well. The in game branching route time travel system was not something I expected to be that well implemented in a game released 14 years before VLR, which essentially does the same thing, just slightly more polished. My biggest complaint is that the game is probably just a bit overly complex (Spoilers, but without knowing anything about the game, you'll probably have no idea how to read that flowchart anyways), and the fact that you have to actually leave a save before you can jump to any point in the flowchart is quite clunky. Overall, not too too bad though, especially since i played through with a walkthrough.

I also have to mention the soundtrack. For a game made in 1996, it's really really good. The stuff they can do with the chiptunes style is just awesome, and i constantly found myself tapping my feet along to the music, and being impressed by how well the music fit the scenes.

Finally, the plot. Probably my biggest issue. I really enjoyed the hard sci-fi atmosphere and time travel stuff, but i felt the plot just went off the rails during the true route. Spoilers. It wasn't too too bad, but really a let down from what i was expecting after the awesome standard routes. I'd still recommend it though, simply because it's a classic. Also am definitely interested in the recently announced remake that's coming out soon.

Finally, since the patch was released yesterday, I started Majikoi. The fact that some people...*cough*/u/insanityissexy*cough* can't seem to stop talking about and are constantly praising it meant i should probably at least give it a shot. Nowhere near far enough into it to have formed an opinion yet though.
