What are some criminally underdeveloped mechanics in 5e?

I wouldn’t really call what I want to do major, though I can see how it might come across like that in my post but I’m just talking about it that way because I’m excited. I just like D&D and writing and wanted to mix the two hobbies into a number of quality of life changes to minor parts of campaigns that I feel are under appreciated, and maybe come up with some tables. I’m not hoping to make this a fully fleshed out supplement kind of thing, just like a fun thing to do as a hobby and as an outlet to be creative. It would be more for the enjoyment of doing it than the outcome, but I can totally see how it may across like I want to write a whole fully detailed and fleshed out book.
