What are some dumb mistakes you made and regret after just moving to Japan?

Hey man, advise to you, don’t assume age. Japanese women can be hard to estimate age just based on how they dress, their culture and general, as well as ethnic features.

STORY TIME.

So no shit there I was, TDY in Kumamoto, Japan. I was walking around town with an Air Force captain and we were young and looking for women. Most Japanese women are pretty standoffish to foreigners and don’t even make eye contact. He and I are walking around for awhile when we lock eyes with two girls to the point where as we walk past each other all four of us are turning our heads, maintaining our gazes at each other. As we pass we spin around and then stop and say “hi”. Next we strike up a 20-min conversation as they speak really good English.

So let’s pause. Two girls. In a big city by themselves. They’re much more forward than any other women we’ve seen after being there for a week. They also speak very good English.

The AF dude I’m with does most of the talking, lots of small talk, nothing crazy. Girls mentioned something about being dropped off for the day by one of their mothers (record scratch goes off in my head). AF dude, without skipping a beat, says “so you ladies wanna meet up later for a dri…” when I cut in and ask “how are are you two?” Yadda, yadda, 13 and 15 (we were 25 and 28 at the time).

I made some excuse about being late for something and pop smoke as fast as I could. I swear the AF guy I was with (just met him a week prior) was more placating me then felt a need to separate ourselves from that situation.

As I type this out I still feel unclean and ashamed I didn’t pick up on their ages sooner. Good news is I hooked up with a PFC later that night so it worked out for me.

TLDR: it can be difficult to determine the age of Japanese girls.
