This might sound weird, but guys with really close girl friends, like dude, I see right through you! I know exactly what you want, and it isn't that you "want to be there for them" or that you "really care for them and want them to be happy". Everytime a guy friend that I've had has spoken like that about a girl it's because they've wanted more than that for a while and either can't muster up the courage to ask her out or know that she'll reject them. To me it's really pathetic because these guys put so much time and energy into something they're probably never going to get. I'm not saying guys and girls can't be friends in a completely platonic fashion, but so many times I've seen the guy harbouring secret feelings for the girl and it's seemingly clear to everyone but her. (And I think she knows too but addressing it would just make the friendship awkward.)
