What bands did you see before they became big?

Oh, in Southern California Sublime had a pretty good following. 40 oz to Freedom got a lot of airplay on KROQ wayyy before they caught on nationally. And not to mention bouncy ska-punk was THE IN thing all over Orange County in the mid-90s. My sister loooved No Doubt, Save Ferris, Reel Big Fish and so on. The Offspring was pretty unknown at the time too. I was a hip-hop head, so Sublime and their KRS One, Easy E, and Too Short references spoke to me. I remember that show being fun as fuck. It was the first time I saw a friendly mosh pit. It was in the sand so people were falling left and right and were being picked up immediately. No Doubt played first and at one point Bradley came on and Sublime started playing with them they did each other's songs. Bradley forgot words to his own songs and Gwen would sing them instead. She had to be on something. To this day, I can't recall ever seeing somebody so fast on stage. They played everything at twice the speed. I remember they played Sunday Morning and that's the only thing from Tragic Kingdom I can recall.

The YYYs wasn't so much early on, but it was their first show in LA, and the tickets were like $10. Cut to a few years later and they're playing venues 100 times the size and charging 3 times as much.

And Airiel Pink just about lived at Spaceland those early years 02-04. I considered him to just be an LA indie darling, along with HarMar Superstar. I always thought he was too irreverent/weird to be recognized outside of LA. I've seen him a dozen times, or so, at little venues in LA alone. Nobody was being recognized for that indie bedroom stuff back then. I didn't start seeing his name being blogged about in the until 06 or so? Now, he's widely known, but who knows Har Mar Superstar? Ariel Pink would open up for him.
