What did a teacher do that made you automatically gain respect for them?

When I was in 5th grade, my great grandmother was ill and was going to pass soon. She lived a 12-ish hour drive from where I live. My dad was planning to drive me there to see her one last time, but I was nervous because I knew I would miss some school work and I dreaded having to make up a week’s worth of work later. However, when I explained the situation to my teacher, he smiled at me and said I wouldn’t have to make up any of the assignments I missed, as he would be counting it as a “historical” trip for me (context is he was a complete nerd for history and loved teaching us all about it). So, I got to go say goodbye to my grandmother and did not have to worry about all that work I missed while I was gone.
