What have you eaten, not realizing what it was until it was too late?

My grandma always used to say if it really came down to it, we could always just eat dog food. She was born in '27 and grew up in Oklahoma during and in the aftermath of the Great Depression, family even had the whole "we'll pay your family to work our farm for us in you having a roof over your head" situation going on until she married. Honestly a lot of her big thing my whole life was "you never know what you'll do when you're desperate" and she said dog food was still meat and edible, etc... Yeah, I don't know if she ever actually lived by that. I do know she never actually was willing to 'prove' its edibility or her words or anything, but for a time was.. almost strangely happy to embrace my willingness to, trying to earn her favor. Only dog treats though, the Canine Carry-outs particularly. Stuff mostly just tasted like relatively dry/grainy (like heavy on the grain, not in texture) meat, whatever meat they were supposed to be, but surprisingly.. very edible. Actually had a weird fondness for the chicken strip ones, they just kinda tasted like breaded or battered grilled chicken. Now days I think maybe my grandma just got a kick out of seeing her preteen grandchild snacking on dog treats for a couple years because of what she said/her advice, even though she was notorious for having literally no sense of or understanding of humor, I don't know. Fifteen years later and I can still remember the taste way too vividly but not as a bad thing, even though the smell of them makes me nauseous (they're edible but not very.. healthy, for a human to consume, shall we say, at least not once or twice daily for several months).
