What first made you love history?

Punishment. The high school I attended in Texas back in the '70's had a punishment called "In-School Suspension". Us kids called it "The Box". One of the many unpleasant things about being in The Box, is that each day you must turn in 25 written pages of classwork by the end of the day. That's for 1st offenders, the next time you're sent to The box, it's 5 days @ 30 pages, up to a maximum of 2 weeks @ 60 pages per day. I was maxxed out. Obviously, nobody has that much actual schoolwork in a day. After finishing your regular assignments you were supposed to make up the balance by copying from your schoolbooks. The History books always have the densest amount of easily copied text. I had a "writer's bump" the size of a pencil eraser. It turns out I remember most of everything I write down, so my grades in that class were excellent. As weird as it sounds, I grew to love History in The Box.
