What food should I buy?

A pair of tongs, plastic or wooden spoon and an oven tray are pretty handy to have.

If you don’t have a toaster, please DM me and I will buy one for you. Bread is usually quite cheap and can be frozen for toast. While probably not the best meal, it can fill a rumbling stomach if you’re really low on cash. Butter, PB & Jelly would be good to have in the cupboard, and should be reasonably low cost also.

Frozen veg, while not the most appetising, will provide you some long life (I.e keep in freezer until needed) nutrition to add to lower cost meals, like pasta and rice.

Shelf stable things like flour, pasta, sugar, rice, salt, beans.. are good to always have, as you can usually buy a couple of extra bits and pieces to make it more interesting, and you’ll always have at least something to eat, even if it’s plain.

But please don’t forget to also buy yourselves a little treat. Surviving is top priority, but having something nice, even if it’s a 50c chocolate bar, is important.
