What kind of pen should I get

Yeah, I agree with /u/UhOhSpaghettiNoes, especially with wooden pens in particular. They stain with ink when you put the cap on the barrel, and because there's a finish, you can't polish it off when it happens. A good compromise is to get a wood grain finished ebonite pen.

Now that I have a budget, lets get you a list of suggestions.

  1. Sailor has a series known as the "Precious Wood" series in your price range. Pilot has their Custom Kaede. Again, these are pretty standard looking pens but you get gold nibs with them!
  2. Looking for wood-like ebonite gets some good results. This Bexley pen is a good example. I've heard their gold nibs are a dream to write with. Conway Stewart also has one at the top of your price range. There's definitely more out there but my search terms are failing me.
  3. Some good metals pens are:
    • Pilot Metal Falcon
    • Many Faber Castell or Graf Von Faber Castell pens like this one. There are also wood variants.
    • Lamy 2000 Stainless Steel. While sleek looking, it's HEAVY.
    • Parker Sonnet? Understated pen, and often faked. Get from a trusted source.
    • Definitely more out there, just can't think of them. Waterman makes only metal pens. They are very much like Parkers.
  4. If nothing suits your fancy, you can always have your dream pen custom done.

I normally don't buy in this price range so my experience is limited. Hope this gets the gears turning.
