What is it like being a web dev outside the West?

I'm not from there originally, but I'm an software engineer in Hong Kong working for one of the banks. The product I'm working on is mostly used in Asia, and working with different government bodies in all those countries is extremely difficult. There's also different security requirements for different countries, for example Taiwan doesn't allow for client data to leave Taiwan. So say goodbye to your one deployment pipeline, you now have to build another one specifically for Taiwan.

But the biggest difference for me was cultural wise, I work with different teams in different countries, and it's often very difficult to find common ground. My colleagues in Singapore are usually more open-minded and outspoken, colleagues in Hong Kong will basically just do whatever they're told without having their own opinions.

Happy to answer more specific questions if you have any.
