What major plot holes can't you get over?

Especially since drilling on an asteroid is nothing at all like drilling on earth. All their prior experience would probably be a negative from wrong preconceptions.

Seriously, on earth you're drilling through relatively soft sedimentary rock, in atmosphere, in gravity. You're circulating drilling mud to lubricate and lift cuttings, it's actually very important to the process. Gravity pulls the drill down, so in reality the vast majority of the drill string is in tension. The rig is huge and burns diesel, none of it would be able to be miniaturized and function in a vacuum without extensive modification. The shit is heavy, built to last, and made of steel. You're not getting it into space. It might have been a "mud motor", but once again, no circulation.

On the asteroid they're drilling through freaking IRON interspersed with sublimating water and other gases. No gravity to provide cutting pressure, so you've got to supply that from above. Nobody has done anything like this, ever. A thorough grasp on physics and mechanical ability would be your best asset here.
