What Masters Degree did you pursue? Was it worth it?

I got my MBA with the thought of doing consulting as my end goal. However, I soon switched to concentrating in entrepreneurship. The reason I switched was due to getting a better understanding of consulting and what I generally wanted out of life. While the skills you learn in the consulting industry are very valuable, the work environment had horrible hours and no work/life balance. I did not, and could not, have expected my values to change while in the MBA as I was sure I was willing to put in the hours required for consulting. That turned out to not be the case.

However, I took the skills learned from the MBA and landed a job in UX research while also starting a business. I work from home, working normal hours with way less stress than consulting, and my salary is far above what I would be making in consulting. I would even say its way better because I work way less hours than my colleagues who went into consulting/management.

Overall, I am happy that I got my MBA since it gave me time to find and pursue what I wanted, while also giving me valuable training. However, the MBA is not a magic bullet. As you can see above, I had to patch together a strategy that worked for me. Sure, the MBA will open doors for you, but you really need to steer your career/life to get them where you want them to be. I don't think any Masters Degree will necessarily be "worth it" if you don't have a goal of what you want to accomplish at the end.
