What movie could have been great but something went wrong along the way?

The Goonies and

Explorers (1985, Ethan Hawke).

I'll explain why, first off - the Goonies is a beloved childhood movie of mine, I love it with all of my heart, but as an adult - I can see that something went horribly wrong with the movie during the last half of the film.

At first, we have this "kids gang" that want to go adventuring together for the last time as the bank is about to foreclose on Mikey (Main Character's) house, so they'll eventually have to move.

Now - everything changes from an interesting Crime Story/Action movie into a weird fantasy pirate thing with a Cyclop humanoid (obviously a seriously malformed child with severe disabilities - seen by the kids as a sort of a pirate and close friend...which is cute, but...Chunk wanting to "adopt him" as a pet or sorts...it just doesn't quite add up somehow. So I keep watching the first part over and over again, because it had all the potential of an amazing adventure movie.

Explorers. Sort of the same deal, it starts out as an amazing adventure, 3 kids have a weird synchronized dream about an electronics design for an alien computer of sorts, one of the kids describes it for his nerdy computer friend - they build it - and discovers that it generates a sort of portable force field they can use to build a rudimentary space ship as it keeps the oxygen inside the bubble. It turns out that an Alien pulls them away, and they lose control over the "spaceship"..

...see? That has the makings of an AMAZING adventure movie, but then it all goes wrong. Badly animated dolls and animatronics simply messes up the movie, and all of a sudden the movie is turned into a cheesy cartoon-doll-sketch of some sort instead of the amazing adventure it started out to be.
