What regulations are debt collectors beholden to? [Oregon]

That can make a big difference if I remember correctly. I would contact them and ask. They are required to give you all the information they have about your debt. If they fail to do so, it could be considered an invalid debt collection. You are well within your rights to know what they are trying to collect on and what you agreed to.

Sometimes if they don't have the info they will drop it all together. It will take some time for them to come up with the documents. If you pay on the debt, you are saying that you owe it no matter what they have. It's always best to contact any company that holds a debt of yours and ask for the documents before you make a payment. There is times where an error will be made and they wrongly go after you. It's happened to me.

I got a letter from a local tax office saying I owed them money. I paid them with a check and went on with my life. A few years later, I got a letter from a collection company saying I owed that same tax I paid off. I sent them a copy of the check that was processed and they said that it was an error and they apologized for bothering me. A few years later another company sent me a letter saying I owed that same tax again. I asked them for the info on the debt. A few days later they said it was an error and apologized for bothering me as well. A few years later another company contacted me saying that I owed that debt again. I contacted them for the info on the debt. They said that they didn't need to because they bought the debt and I owe them. I sent them a copy of the check that was processed by the county tax office and they said it wasn't enough proof. I told them to take me to court. They eventually sold the debt to another company and they sent me a letter saying I now owed them. At this point the debt was 8 years paid off, the date of when the debt originated was on the notice. I contacted the company and told them that the debt was long paid off and the limitations were long past. It's been 6 years since I was bothered about that debt. I still have a feeling that someone will buy it and I will have to go through that again.
