This is going to sound so dumb but I used to live with a shitty housemate who broke the lid of our bin and refused to buy a new one. They also refused to put the lid back on everytime they threw something out because it was 'gross'. It was the middle of Summer and bug galore. She just left the garbage out in the open and it made our small apartment smell. Around two days later I woke up to the smell of bin juice, discarded seafood and a fly infested kitchen. I was so mad that I just put the bin in her room and shut the door behind it. She was gone for the night and I was going out to work. Needless to say the message got across and she bought a new bin by the time I arrived home.
