what's the best way to promote your music?

I gonna guess you work in promotions/management in some way. Possibly a&r.

Im not saying you are a vulture yourself, you seem earnest and offer good advice, but many people I have come across in management/promotions are basically scam artists and/or shitty people looking to pimp a band.

Not only is it hard to do anything on your own anymore as a band and get somewhere, You have gotta watch out for scammers and sleazy people in management and promotions. Many of them are straight up predatory. They know exactly how the deck is stacked against bands and exploit a bands naive willingness to play for very little money.

Everyone thinks your are either a musical philanthropist or an easy target to pimp and exploit. You are stuck between a rock and a hard place finically speaking.

Is it utterly hopeless? No... But the deck is stacked against you in every way at every stage from an financial prospective.

Realistically, you need a huge amount of money to bankroll promotions and touring on a large scale if you expect to get anywhere. Meanwhile the expected dividends on said investment are a long way off and have a very low chance of success, even with a talented group of players and great music.

Meanwhile as a person on the real world you still have to maintain a place to live, food, job, ect. When not touring. Thats nearly impossible to make work without having boatloads of money before you even begin.

This brings me back to my original point.

  1. Be rich.
  2. Don't not be rich.

Otherwise, you are basically "chasing the dragon" as venues, promoters, and management use the shit of you along the way and the crowds think you are running a charity musical group that travels the country in a magical bus that runs off good vibes and free beer.

Ill be the first to admit im bitter, but it comes from experience. Most people that have been through the process are the same way after a decade or two of the harsh reality of this business.
