It has been a very interesting experience. You can have sex whenever you want tbh as long as either party can host.
The gay population on the apps is mostly Levantine Arabs - Syrian and Lebanese (with some Jordanians and Palestinians), Saudis being the other major group, the last third or so are made up by other nationalities and races (Whites, Asians, Blacks, Indians). A lot of men in their late 20s and 30s say the "bi" because they have issues with their sexuality and masculinity. Also, being a fag is bad while being bi can be seen as a cool thing. Some even have wives and kids. The younger saudi + other arab men - 18 to early 20s - are often more accepting of their sexuality and will say that they are gay and try to keep away from marriage as best as they can. So things are progressing nicely.
People share their pics and meet up for hookups just like anywhere else. Lately more and more guys are putting their faces on their display pics. The religious police has been defrocked and there are no honey pots or whatever to entrap you. Its similar in the UAE and Bahrain etc. No witchhunts, No beheadings, no beatings nothing. It is however not okay to host drag parties. Or loud parties in general. If you are being noisy late into the night your neighbors will call the police and they'll shut you down like anywhere else. Now that MBS is in power and the religious police are losing more of their power, it'll definitely be interesting to see how that will play out.
People try and emulate whatever they see when they travel to the US and Europe. So you have similar drama etc. It is actually easier for two men to meet and have sex than it is for straight people to meet on tinder.
You will be happy to know that the racism is the same as everywhere else. No blacks, no Asians, no Indians - no mingling with the labor races here. Even if someone has a preference for them they are very discreet about it. Another one is the hate for fem guys. its okay to be gay but not okay to be a "fag" or khaneet ("men who resemble women"). Even amongst gay men they are looked down upon. Also, bottom shame exists here as well.
Only difference so to speak is that if you are white and in your 20s/30s you are exotic and hence very much in demand. Especially since being friends with you raises their social status and grants them access to parties at the embassies and compounds (read - access to alcohol and drugs) (Christmas + new years is party time here :) ). Lots of white guys capitalize on this and have sex with men WAY out of their leagues, guys who would never even look at them twice when they were back home. Dadbod, daddies, chubs and BDSM are big here this year so things have been even more interesting for my older gay friends.
Lastly, I would like to conclude by saying HOOKUP culture has been surprisingly like any other major city in North America. Something, my friends back home have been quite disappointed to hear. They were hoping for stories about depraved orgies with 72 virgins, witchhunts, beheadings and involuntary beatings and god knows what else. Oh well, we'll just have to stick to the classics I guess.
P.S I've tried to keep things as general as I can since I am describing the majority of a whole culture. Some of these are obviously stereotypical. There are obviously going to plenty of other stories and exceptions. Also, I'm a little drunk - its Christmas afterall.
