When a mass killing happens, youth and maleness are worth noting

Young men are being radicalized online. Extremist communities, whether it is incel culture or Daesh (such as it is now) or the alt-right, offer a certainty of self and purpose. As I’ve written before, these groups prey on the isolation and vulnerability of some young men.

live in Toronto, and when news about the attack broke I was with classmates studying for finals. The student sitting across the table from me in the college library said, "Wow, I just walked through that area this morning!" This hit close to home for many people here.

We were literally studying for an exam about mental health disorders, for our nursing program. We talked about how it sounds like this was a toxic combination of social isolation, depression, anger, suicidal ideation, and online communities that push violent hatred.
