When Medi-Cal Doesn't Cover Your Chips Ahoy

Used to think this. Then became friends with some people I later found out were on medical assistance. Let me tell you, the stress of financial hardship can make even the most kindhearted and well intentioned people into monsters. On top of that, just dealing with medicaid's hoops you have to jump through just to get qualified and covered is horrendous. We have to remember that as the pharmacy, we are last in a long chain of events that leads to a Medicaid prescription being covered.

It is wise for any healthcare worker, especially pharm techs and pharmacists, to get familiar with the requirements for qualifying for Medicaid. It will help immensely in helping patients navigate it. It also helps with compassion and will raise your threshold for tolerating being bitched at about Medicaid bullshit which honestly just lowers your stress level on the job.

Now obviously that does not excuse people from taking their frustrations out on us as clearly we are not the cause of their situation. But it's always a good idea to put yourself in your patients shoes once and a while.
