Wondering about value of degree

I would consider it a top school and not because I go there and not because the ranks already say so, but just from:

  • Professors are very well qualified (at least in my program). Many are graduates from Ivy League schools in the US. Many professors have completed undergrad studies here and went abroad to complete studies at Harvard, MIT, Stanford and Oxford. We simply have a better faculty and we tend to attract the best and brightest from the states, which arguably would make the quality of education higher.

  • Good Professors (see above) also bring research, and research brings fame-and-fortune. UofT is home to a lot of groundbreaking medical research, computer science research (machine learning, NP-completeness theory). This puts us miles ahead of other schools in the US as we tend to be producing great research.

  • University of Toronto holds a stronger name because it's Canadian. I know that sounds weird, but schools such as UofT, McGill and UBC automatically stand out because they are the "good schools" of Canada, and as a result that differentiating factor helps create a bit more 'oomph' compared to many american schools - which are just another "good top 50 school".

  • Lots of undergrad opportunities, NSERC, as well as international recognition really help funnel UofT to be in a position higher than many schools in the US.

If you honestly want to compare it to US schools, I think one of the best schools to compare it to is UC Berkeley. We tend to have pretty similar characteristics.

That being said... here are the key differences.

  • Top schools in the US accept only the best students in the nation, where as in Canada, we don't use the SAT system and rely on Grade 12 (senior year) grades which results in grade inflation and biases, meaning many students are admitted here. It's certainly not as selective as top american schools, but it's not a cake walk either. You certainly need some pretty good grades.

  • We don't have the same networking connections a top tier school in the US does. There are opportunities that exist here that cannot be found at other Canadian/American universities but they don't compare to Stanford/MIT/Harvard.

Tl;DR - UofT is a great school. Some things compare to top tier schools (such as good profs, research) and some things don't (selectivity of student body, opportunities). You won't go wrong with a UofT degree either way - it's very well recognized internationally as a top-tier school. The name tends to carry itself.
