To work or not to work?

My school has told me it's "not recommended" during 1L. A student panel at the school's orientation said that short shifts with very flexible hours can be ok (i.e. campus jobs). I took out enough financial aid to get through 1L without a job, but with 70% of my attendance cost being covered by large loans, I'd really like to help myself in whatever way I can/possibly have some leftover this year to go toward next year. I've also held a stressful hospital job (20-30 hrs/week) throughout my entire education up to this point, so maybe I can manage a zero-stress, mellow campus job? I got an interview for a library job...

A friend of mine currently in law school (albeit a higher ranked school) said it's possible that those who said working is okay aren't doing all they should be in school, i.e. joining law reviews and clubs. What do you all think?

Thanks!
