Health Insurance During School

If you are going through the marketplace I would do some research before signing up.

Look to see if your local hospital accepts the insurance. Is there a doctor you need to see frequently? Then see if they are under the HMO plan. If not, you'll need to look at PPO. However, some doctors dont take the individual PPO plans (they only take employer based PPO).

Do you need labs? Specialists? That will be more difficult through HMO. You will need a referral every time from the same doctor. You have to pick the doctor when you sign up. That means there is a limited pool of doctors to choose from.

With individual PPO they might cover some out of network labs but you have to look (most are 40% to 50%).
