advice on this catalina 30?

I made this checklist for myself!

General questions - [ ] Any known issues or groundings or collisions - [ ] Any engine/transmission rebuilds or replacements - [ ] Last time the impeller was replaced? - [ ] Any rigging replacements/how old is standing rigging? - [ ] Any electronics upgrades or overhauls? - [ ] Does it have dodger or bimini - [ ] Tall or standard rig? - [ ] How long has it been on the market - [ ] Anyone else looking at the boat? - [ ] Sails- type, age, and condition

Hull/Keel/Rudder - [ ] Does the mast line up with the keel when looking straight on? - [ ] Look at the hull for color distortions which indicate repairs - [ ] Inspect leading edge of the keel for grounding damage - [ ] Check hull to keel joint, if wider on one end it could indicate a grounding - [ ] Check rudder hinges if lose or secure - [ ] Swing rudder to make sure it moves - [ ] Does the rudder have drain holes which have been sealed? - [ ] Check the hull for blisters or pox (near cradle pads especially) - [ ] Check thru-hulls, paddle wheel and any electronics on hull - [ ] Check propeller, propeller shaft, cutlass bearing

Deck/Mast/Rigging

  • [ ] Check for additional caulk/sealant around windows, stanchions, chainplates, or any fittings
  • [ ] Walk around deck to check for large delaminating areas
  • [ ] Use head of screwdriver to tap on suspected spots
  • [ ] Check conditions of hardware on deck such as winches, stanchion base, bow pulpit, stern rail, hatches, windows, running lights, any running rigging.
  • [ ] Check for cracks on gelcoat or anti skid area (could be cometic)
  • [ ] Cockpit check seats, locker covers, and the floor.
  • [ ] Open lockers and remove anything in the way such as sail to inspect thoroughly.
  • [ ] Check lockers for propane tanks. Should have separate locker with overflow vents
  • [ ] Check engine instruments above deck including engine hours, oil pressure, fuel love, and battery level.
  • [ ] Check rigging for broken strands aka meat hooks.
  • [ ] Check rigging terminals for rust/cracks/corrosion
  • [ ] Check spreaders if possible at attachment point.
  • [ ] Try out the roller furler
  • [ ] See if standing rigging is lose at all and why?

Cabin/Below Deck - [ ] Smell for mold - [ ] Check lower bulkheads for water stains which could mean flooding - [ ] Open bilge and locks and compartments under seats and berths - [ ] Check condition of thru-hulls and hoses and hose clamps - [ ] Check for cracks in in flood boards - [ ] Check for signs of standing water and look for osmotic blistering - [ ] Check for signs of separation from the bulkhead - [ ] Open and close doors near main bulkhead for alignment. Could mean pressure from the mast. - [ ] Examine window for leaks or water stains - [ ] Check chainplates - [ ] Check cushions (seem to be okay in pictures) - [ ] Check stove and connections and gimbal system - [ ] Check fire extinguisher and expiration date - [ ] Check icebox

Plumbing and Electrical - [ ] Check fresh water tans, hoses and hose clamps - [ ] Check hand/foot/electic pumps - [ ] Make sure waste holding tank is vented outside - [ ] Check for any extra electronic equipment wired into existing system - [ ] Look for frayed wires, lose wires, wire gauge - [ ] Ask if electrical system has been replace/upgraded/changed - [ ] Check battery terminals for corrosion - [ ] Check batteries are/can be properly secured - [ ] Check battery condition- i.e. swelling or cracking - [ ] Check under sink plumbing - [ ] Check hot water heater under q berth - [ ] Check head and pump - [ ] Find out what type of radar system/power/model number

Sails and Engine - [ ] Difficult to asses engine… can’t run it - [ ] Check belts to see if old/damaged - [ ] Check engine cleanliness - [ ] Check oil levels, ask how often it was replaced, ask for service records - [ ] Check dipstick for signs or corrosion, mud, or watered down oil (indicates a leak) - [ ] Crisp and stiff sails are newer
