First off, the whole premise of this argument is that automatically granting an 18% tip warrants a reaction of no further tipping is required because "they told me how much to tip" reaction kicks in.

In reality, there are a whole host of issues that fall into serving such a large group at once (all of which fall outside of the servers control i.e. Ability of the kitchen to handle large groups, number of drink stations, other logistical issues such as # of bartenders making cocktails, etc).
Yes, that's why the 18% rule was enacted. So servers didn't get fucked if something was out of their control.
