Like I said: if that's the case then I agree with the comment saying it was reasonable for you to get it back. Props to you for budgeting and sticking to it.

All I'm saying is that under most circumstances I (and many people) would assume someone who invited us over for pizza could afford to lose $14. You said in another comment your other friends understood, but clearly this one did not. I'm not saying what they did was right, just that they probably didn't fully understand the situation. If they actually made a big deal of it then I'd say they are an asshole, I'd have thought it was odd but I'd have just dropped it and moved on with my life.
