So he only started bringing up a breakup tonight after thinking about his life choices and things of that sort, but that seems him being more unhappy with his life circumstances than him being unhappy with me

The whole reason for it he stated was that he wants to go out and do things, but I've never really told him "stay in and spend time with me! 1! 1! 11" Because we're both homeschooled I honestly encourage him to go out and do the things I can't because my parents won't let me do anything spectacular. He claimed to be stupid and tired and all in all confused, but mostly he just seemed out of it. So instead of breaking up I asked if a break was better and he agreed I just wanted to ask if this was an alright course of action and I'm not just being overattached.
