I appreciate this and needed to hear this perspective. I did not intend any harm by use of the coded language, which is unacceptable, and I need to further examine my own biases. The racial differences should not play a role in how we assess the situation, but they inevitably do because of our general inexperience and probably lack of social skills. In my head, I assume that if we politely ask them to turn the music down, we will undoubtedly face retaliation or harassment, which is not worth the risk. We've had several friendly interactions with the neighbors already, but also on some occasions have been harassed in passing based on our whiteness. I am feeling both internally conflicted and guilty for even asking because we just do not feel like we belong on the block.
