Amazon Reportedly Killed an AI Recruitment System Because It Couldn't Stop the Tool from Discriminating Against Women - thought you may enjoy, algorithm's need adaptions to deal with 'biases in data'

This is not surprising or alarm if you know a little bit about the technology.

They're probably using a neural network to pick the most promising resumes from a large pile. A neural network is just a program that uses some basic statistics to determine how to classify a given data sample. Such a network needs to be trained on existing data, in this case probably the list of accepted and rejected candidate resumes.

In a case like the hiring of software engineers, the neural network would probably tend to eliminate female resumes simply because females are statistically underrepresented in the sample data, leading to an outcome that is actually more biased against women than the regular hiring process, which might or might not be biased at all.
