Exactly. The correlation could be completely bogus. People manipulate data all the time until it gets them a nice line on a graph. "Oooh let's look at this on a logarithmic scale. Maybe exponential. Maybe the time scale should be the square root of the dosage divided by the age of the person's oldest child." Sometimes shifting the way we scale upon which we see the data is important and illustrative. Sometimes it's BS so you can make someone feel like they didn't just burn a bunch of grant money to get a smattering of dots on an x/y axis.
It's tedious and boring but close examination of methodology and critique of how people are compiling their findings is crucial to furthering any scientific endeavor
