Americans who visited Europe, what was your biggest WTF moment?

I didn't really get a chance to ask for the bill. I'd try doing a quick wave and they'd go into the back for a good twenty minutes. I know it sounds like I did something to make them act this way, but I'm always super anxious and try to be courteous to everyone, especially when I'm the tourist foreigner. I learned Dutch and everything, but I guess I must've done something I didn't notice. I looked it up too and started finding articles like this.

I guess that made me think it was a common occurrence if a few sites touch upon the subject. I had some amazing wait staff while I was in Amsterdam too. I don't think it's a situation where every Amsterdamer waiter is an asshole. I had some really nice waiters and waitress during the trip.
