Has anyone here bought or rented a house with a dark history of murders or hauntings etc? What happened and How did you found out?

Once when I was like 16, my family took a trip to the Tetons, where we stayed in some nice little attached apartment-type rooms. However, our last night there we found out that the company had accidentally double booked the room and they offered my family what they called their "special time-share up the road, that happens to be empty just this weekend!"

We got all excited and drive over to it. It's this GORGEOUS, multi-million dollar home nestled in this hollow on the edge of a cliff, overlooking the Tetons. I'm telling you, I will never experience that kind of niceness ever again. The place is fully furnished with dark oak, 8 bedrooms (I have a seven person family, so this part was really nice) with like 4 full baths, two layer deck, hottub and everything. It's huge. I get my own wing and settle in for the night.

There's a lovely oak bookcase in my room, and I decided to read a bit before sleeping. Only, something is strange because all of the books are about crime, murder and darker things. There are some really expensive looking, aged copies of Dr. Jekyl, but also some new copies of John Grisham and Steven King. I grab one book (I forget what, I think it was maybe King) and start reading. It's about 11 PM when I turn off my light, and notice that the blinds don't come down fully on one of the windows. It's then that I also notice that the veranda door doesn't appear to be shut completely. I get a little spooked (I was reading about a murder, gimme a break) and get up to see if I can shut it.

The lock is broken and the door only kind of shuts. Furthermore, the blind appears to be broken on the window next to it. I feel a bit exposed. This veranda opens up to the yard, so anyone can get on the veranda and access my room. I'm a 16 year old, petite female. I'm envisioning all sorts of bloody ends. I decide to go to bed with the lights on and a chair propped up to the door (I felt foolish at the idea of going to my parent's room at 16...).

I wake up two hours later, completely terrified. I'm sweaty, my heart is racing... I have no idea why. I turn to my right to face the open closet door and remember my dream. There were bodies in the attic. Before I had gone to bed, I remembered thinking it was strange that the closet door was missing, and that the panel that opened into the attic appeared to be leaking insulation into the closet, which had a different carpet than the rest of the house.

Anyway, I was completely spooked and ended up going to my parent's room anyway, only to discover that all of my siblings had felt similarly spooked and were already there.

In the morning we were getting picked up for some tour, and the tour guide seemed surprised to find out that we had stayed the night at this place. She explained that about six months ago, a complete stranger (who was never found) broke into the house through the room that I had been staying in. He'd smashed the glass (ruining the blinds) in the window next to the door after unsuccessfully trying to break the lock off.

He then killed the woman in the room and proceeded to kill two other people staying in the home. Then he stuffed their bodies in the attic and left. The next renters found the massacre. It was very hushed up because they were afraid it would hurt the tourism profits, so they shoddily repaired the area and rented out the house to unsuspecting visitors for one night here, one night there...

I can't explain the bookcase full of grim books though. That was just weird...
